The Google Map on Your Website May Stop Working: Fix It Before July 16

Does your website contain an embedded Google Map?

If yes, this post is for you. Google has created a new cloud services product known as Google Maps Platform. This will effectively replace the old Google Maps solution. Beginning on July 16th, 2018, Google will require all websites that contain an API Key, to link their account to a credit card. Any website that contains a Google Map in any way, shape, or form has an API Key, and will require a new key. Common applications for a Google Map on a website include showing a store’s physical location, or providing users with driving directions.

So what does this mean for you?

Basically, you need to create and account with Google Maps Platform and register for a new API key in order to keep your Google Map running smoothly, without performance issues or an error. This will also require you to enter your credit card information. The credit card will link to your API Key. Once, your credit card is linked, your Google Map must be re-embedded onto your website in order to function properly. Not sure how to do that? Contact our Support Team!

Does this mean Google will be charging your credit card?

Your credit card will NOT be charged unless your Google Map exceeds the $200 monthly credit. This is extremely rare, as 98% of all websites that contain a Google Map will not exceed this $200/ month amount. In order to exceed this $200 credit, the Google Map on your website would need to surmount over 1,000 interactions per month.

How do I update my API Key with a credit card?
